About the University of Sarajevo

The University of Sarajevo is a public university considered Bosnia’s oldest and largest university, dating back to 1573. It was established with the signing of Gazi Husrevbey’s Endowment, one of the most prominent princes of Bosnia and Herzegovina, during the Ottoman Empire’s rule over the region. The university previously included some schools, such as the Sharia Judicial School in addition to the National Museum, until it was formally established as a university in 1949 after incorporating several faculties, currently totaling 22 faculties, including the Faculty of Dentistry.

In 1996, the University of Sarajevo joined the European higher education reform support programs, leading to the development of the educational process at the university and throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. The university was also keen to establish a strong presence and prove itself in contemporary European and international academic circles. After Bosnia and Herzegovina’s participation in the Bologna Process in 2003, which ensures a high-quality educational level for all universities in the country, along with other universities in the participating European countries, the University of Sarajevo worked on enhancing its educational system and adhering to the standards set by the Bologna Process by the academic year 2005/2006.
