Education System in Kosovo
Kosovo adopts the standards of the Bologna Process, where the educational system and curricula have been developed with international support and the application of modern European education standards to enhance the educational process and ensure quality. The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) has been implemented, which is used in almost all higher education institutions across European countries. The Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI) is the official body responsible for organizing, accrediting, and developing higher education in all higher education institutions in Kosovo.
The education system in Kosovo is divided into three main educational stages:
Bachelor’s Degree: The duration of study is 3 or 4 years.
Master’s Degree: The duration of study ranges from 1 to 2 years after completing the bachelor’s degree.
Doctorate Degree: The study duration is at least 3 academic years to obtain a doctorate.
Higher Education Institutions
With significant advancements in the higher education system, Kosovo now boasts a variety of leading higher education institutions. Higher education institutions in Kosovo are diverse, including both public and private institutions, categorized as follows:
Universities: They offer programs in various scientific fields for all educational stages (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate). Kosovo has 7 public universities and 15 private universities.
University Colleges: They offer vocational and academic programs and can grant bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in fewer academic fields than universities.
Colleges: They offer vocational and academic programs for bachelor’s and master’s degrees only.
Higher Vocational Schools: They offer vocational programs for the bachelor’s degree only.
Academies: They provide programs in specific fields of arts, sports, or vocational areas for bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Language of Study in Kosovo
Although Albanian and Serbian are the official languages of the Republic of Kosovo, and many study programs are offered in these languages, many higher education institutions in Kosovo now offer programs in English. English is also widely spoken as a foreign language.
