Cairo University, located in Giza, west of Cairo, is the second oldest university in Egypt after Al-Azhar University. The university is renowned for its Grand Celebration Hall, a dome-shaped structure 52 meters high, centrally located on the main campus. The hall opened in 1935, can accommodate around 4000 people, and hosts cultural seminars and art exhibitions. It has recently been renovated and retains its unique architectural style while incorporating the latest lighting, air conditioning, and translation technologies, supporting simultaneous translation into seven foreign languages. The hall includes a large theater and orchestra pit used for the university’s cultural and artistic events.
Historical Background
Cairo University was founded in the early 20th century, driven by the efforts of national leaders like Muhammad Abduh, Mustafa Kamil, and Saad Zaghloul. They initiated a national movement to realize Egypt’s dream of a scientific and social renaissance, striving to establish a university as a beacon of free thought and a hub for scientific progress.
The Egyptian University (now Cairo University) officially opened in December 1908, with Khedive Abbas II in attendance. Initially, classes were held in various locations until permanent facilities were built in 1928. Over time, the university expanded to include new faculties. In 1953, its name was changed from the Egyptian University to Cairo University.
In subsequent years, many faculties and institutes were established in various disciplines, extending the university’s reach beyond the local environment to neighboring governorates. Today, Cairo University continues to admit new students and provide high-quality educational services to Egyptian and international students.
